It is useless to confront even a moral man, while he is still imperfect, with the categorical imperative “become at once immortal and incorruptible!” Thus only the second moment is left for ethics, and our moral principle may be more closely defined as follows: subordinate the flesh to the spirit, in so far as it is necessary for the dignity and the independence of the latter. Hoping finally for a complete mastery over the physical forces in yourself and in nature as a whole, take for your immediate and binding purpose not to be, at any rate, the bondman of rebellious matter or chaos.
